THE SURE FOUNDATION
"For no one can lay any foundation other than
the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:11, NIV).
No component of a building is more important to its stability than the foundation. The
strength and design of the building are critically dependent on the quality of the
foundation. Without a solid foundation, the building is worthless and even dangerous.
Writing about Christ's place in the church, the apostle Paul skillfully employs an
architectural metaphor to portray this principle. Not only is Christ the sure foundation,
but He is the one and only foundation. As the hymn writer puts it: "The church has
one foundation, 'tis Jesus Christ her Lord." The durability and impregnability of the
church are grounded on the solidarity of the sure foundation. The church's message,
mission, and destiny are secure and steadfast because they are built on the bed rock of
Christ the firm foundation.
"To those who believe, Christ is a sure foundation. ... This is the only foundation
upon which we may securely build. It is broad enough for all, and strong enough to sustain
the weight and burden of the whole world."--Review and Herald, May 25, 1911. The
foundation of the Christian gospel cannot fail or fall. The Scriptures confidently affirm
that "God's solid foundation stands firm" (2 Timothy 2:19, NIV). It is so firm
and reliable that "the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matthew 16:18,
NIV).
In every aspect of the Christian life--domestic or spiritual, personal or
corporate--Christ is the sure foundation. The following inspired gem deserves our deepest
reflection: "In our character building we must build on Christ. He is the sure
foundation-- a foundation which can never be moved. The tempest of temptation and trial
cannot move the building which is riveted to the Eternal Rock."--Sons and Daughters
of God, p. 155.
My Prayer Today: Lord, since Jesus is the sure foundation, I will build securely
on Him. Amen! |
